Research Resources

The University of Pittsburgh Schools of Health Sciences support over fifty shared biomedical research resources.  Supported facilities range from the Peptide and Peptoid Synthesis Facility to the Center for Advanced Genomics and the Genomics Analysis Core to the Health Services Research Data Center. The areas of expertise represented by these facilities include but are not limited to: multiple modalities of in vivo and in situ imaging and microscopy for clinical and preclinical research, high dimensional ‘omics data generation (mass spectrometry, next generation sequencing and spatial biology) and analysis, specialized assay techniques with high precision and/or multiplexing capabilities, and a variety of data and computing related matters. The Research Resources Coordinator, Deborah Hollingshead, serves to connect investigators to these research support resources through consultation and the searchable web portal.

For Laboratory and computing resources search the Biomedical Research Resources Portal.

For regulatory and administrative support services related to the conduct of research, see the list below.

The Center for Military Medicine Research (CMMR) was established in June 2012 to provide a formal mechanism through which the challenges and opportunities of casualty care and wound healing can be examined at an advanced research level. The center has identified a network of successful partnerships and collaborations between scientists, clinicians, industry, and the U.S. Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs to foster the most promising research technologies and therapeutic strategies.

Areas of Focus include:

  • Regenerative medicine and tissue engineering
  • Reconstructive surgery
  • Transplantation immunology
  • Bioinformatics
  • Human performance
  • Vision Restoration
  • Traumatic Brain Injury

Education and Compliance Office - For Human Subject Research

Suite 401 Hieber Building
3500 Fifth Avenue
Phone: 412-648-4010

The Education and Compliance Office for Human Subject Research (ECO-HSR) provides research compliance services and education for bio-medical and psycho-social researchers in all departments and schools throughout the University.  In particular, the ECO-HSR conducts Research Investigator Start-Up Education (RISE) reviews and monitoring sponsor-investigator IND/IDE protocols. In addition, the ECO-HSR program includes a strong research education component. The Pitt Research Network Seminar Series (PRN) is a collaboration between the ECO-HSR and the IRB to provide updated regulatory education and information on “best research practices.” ECO-HSR staff members also provide presentations on good research practices to individual departments upon request.

Education and Compliance Office - For Laboratory Animal Research

Suite 200 Hieber Building
3500 Fifth Avenue
Phone: 412-383-2008

The role of the compliance component associated with the Laboratory Animal Research Program is oversight through (a) random protocol reviews, (b) “for cause” protocol audits, and (c) semi-annual site visits to animal housing and use areas.  There is a close association between this office and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

The ICRE's primary objectives are to develop, nurture, and support a cadre of clinical and translational scientists by building on the University of Pittsburgh's existing clinical research training programs to establish a comprehensive program with activities ranging from early research exposure for high school students to programs for faculty. We offer degrees in clinical and translational science as well as medical education. We also have numerous career development programs for trainees across the pipeline.

UPMC Center for Continuing Education in the Health Sciences

Suite 302 Iroquois Building
Phone: 412-647-8232

The purpose of the Center for Continuing Education in the Health Sciences is to advance the academic, clinical, and service missions of the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences and UPMC through the continuing professional development of physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and other health professionals and the translation of biomedical knowledge into clinical practice.

The effects of the Center's activities are measured through the assessment of knowledge, professional performance, clinical outcomes, and population health. This is accomplished through a variety of methodologies including survey tools, reflective exercises, pre- and post-activity knowledge and competency testing, and measurement of healthcare outcomes. These data are used to assess the effectiveness of our activities and to continuously improve the quality of education offered to our target audiences.
