The University of Pittsburgh’s Office of University Counsel (OUC) (Formerly Office of General Counsel) provides legal services to the University of Pittsburgh. The OUC attorneys are responsible for preparation and review of University contracts and agreements, representing the University in legal proceedings and providing legal advice to the University, including that related to research compliance issues. The OUC is also responsible for responding to government investigational requests, subpoenas, and requests for information under state or federal open

The University of Pittsburgh Radiation Safety Office is responsible for ensuring that all sources of licensed radioactive material and ionizing radiation producing equipment, which fall under its responsibility, are used optimally and safely. The office also ensures that these sources of ionizing radiation are used in compliance with applicable federal and state regulations and with institutional licenses. The University of Pittsburgh Radiation Safety Program covers all of the main and regional campuses in addition to UPMC Presbyterian/Shadyside, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, and Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC.

The Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Support (OSPARS) promotes and facilitates the research, education, and outreach missions of UPMC by supporting and administering administration of sponsored programs and sponsor-initiated clinical trials.

OSPARS facilitates sponsored programs and clinical trials by assisting in reviewing and endorsing proposals, negotiating agreements, accepting and authorizing awards, interpreting sponsor rules and guidelines, and providing post-award administration services.

All clinical trials involving UPMC facilities and/or UPMC personnel must adhere to certain policies and procedures. The purview of OSPARS is to facilitate the review, execution, and approval for all industry-initiated clinical trials at UPMC, as well as, investigator-initiated studies led by non-University investigators/staff (e.g., UPMC physicians not having a University of Pittsburgh affiliation, private physicians having no University affiliation).
